Far Cry Instincts: Predator, an introduction.

Far Cry Instincts was one of the last great games we reviewed for the Xbox. Instead of simply porting the hit PC version of Far Cry, the developers decided to redo the game and not only make it a fresh experience but also one that was more suited to the Xbox. The result was superb and Far Cry Instincts has to be regarded as one of the best games on the Xbox console. In fact it's not a game you should miss out on and thanks to Far Cry Instincts: Predator you can now enjoy the original game, and its follow-up Far Cry Instincts: Evolution, on the Xbox 360.

What's the game about?

Far Cry Instincts: Predator is a combination of the Far Cry Instincts and Far Cry Instincts: Evolution games that have appeared on the Xbox. To begin with Jack Carver is hired by Val Cortez to take her out to the Jacutan Islands so that she can take pictures for her editor. It all goes horribly wrong though as Val is taken prisoner and Jack is hunted like a wild animal. As the game progresses Jack obtains feral abilities which help to give him an edge in combat. The Evolution story begins with Jack being hired by a young woman named Kade who wants Jack to act as her bodyguard as she conducts some arms dealing. As you'd expect it all goes wrong and once again Jack's fighting for his life on a tropical island. In the Evolution story Jack will have his feral abilities to begin with, although this doesn't make things any easier.

What's good about the game?

If you haven't played Far Cry Instincts at all then Far Cry Instincts: Predator is quite simply excellent value for money. We gave the original Far Cry Instincts a well deserved 9.1/10 and having revisited the single player game in Predator we are still impressed with it. In fact the package as a whole is impressive for those who have yet to play through Far Cry Instincts. The original Far Cry Instincts was quite lengthy and although the Evolution story is fairly short, you've still got a great amount of play time with the two games combined into this one package. The multiplayer side of things has been beefed up with modes such as Chaos, Team Chaos, Predator and Seek & Secure being added. The multiplayer options include System Link, Split-screen and Xbox Live so there should be plenty here for whatever form of multiplayer action you prefer. The map editor makes a return too and once again it's very impressive. What I like most about the editor is its ease of use and it's possible to create fairly detailed maps with the minimum of effort. These maps can also be played over Xbox Live, which is a really nice touch.

What's not so good about the game?

If you've already played Far Cry Instincts on the Xbox then it's questionable whether you'll find Predator value for money. The extra multiplayer options are good and the new Evolution story is quite enjoyable (although it's only around half the length of the original campaign) but the main attraction is the original campaign and you will have already experienced this in Far Cry Instincts. Incidentally in case you were wandering if you can jump straight to the Evolution story, it's not possible as the original Far Cry Instincts story must be completed first. Whilst the graphics have seen an increase in resolution to match the HD output of the Xbox 360 and the texture detail has been increased a little, the graphics still don't look that much better than in the original game.

How does it look?

Far Cry Instincts looked great on the Xbox and Far Cry Instincts still looks good on the Xbox 360. However, it wouldn't be right to say the game takes full advantage of the extra power the Xbox 360 offers. Sure the game now plays in HD (if you have an HD display of course) and it's obvious the game has taken advantage of this increased resolution but otherwise there's no real increase in quality over the original Far Cry Instincts. Having said that though, when you compare the game with the original Xbox version it's noticeable that certain textures have been improved to give the game a more detailed look. If you're using a normal TV you won't see any real difference between the Xbox Far Cry Instincts and this Xbox 360 version. Still the game is more than good enough to compensate for any disappointments you might have with the graphical elements of the game.

How deaf gamer friendly is the game?

Just like Far Cry Instincts, Far Cry Instincts Predator offers subtitles so you'll be able to follow the game's story. Tutorial messages are shown in text. Objectives are shown in text and these objectives can be recalled at any time. Enemies are shown on your radar as well as locations you need to be heading for. Some speech isn't subtitled though. Zooming in with your special binoculars (which have the ability to listen to conversations from far off) you'll find that the speech here isn't subtitled. Speech coming from approaching enemies isn't subtitled either. On the whole though, the game should not cause any problems for deaf gamers.

Final thoughts.

Far Cry Instincts: Predator is a great FPS that's well worth a purchase if you haven't played the original Far Cry Instincts. If you have played the original Far Cry Instincts (and still have access to your Xbox) you may want to opt for the Xbox version of Far Cry Instincts: Evolution because it's cheaper and you can jump straight into the new story. Those who haven't access to an Xbox or who haven't played Far Cry Instincts will enjoy Predator though, because although the game hasn't had much of a graphical facelift the game itself is still very impressive and feels sufficiently different from the other FPS games you will have already played on the Xbox 360.

Overall Game Rating: 8.5/10

Whilst Far Cry Instincts Predator probably isn't for those who have already played Far Cry Instincts on the Xbox, it's pretty much a must own title for those who have yet to experience the game. As well as having an HD version of Far Cry Instincts you also get the new Far Cry Instincts Evolution too and all of the multiplayer options to boot.
