Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a game that demands teamwork. Those hoping for a standard run and gun shooter just won’t appreciate what the game has to offer and that’s rather unfortunate. Those hoping for an interesting single-player experience will also find themselves being disappointed with what’s on offer. However, those looking for a solid team and class-based shooter will appreciate what the game has to offer. That’s not to say it’s a game that’s up there with the best FPS experiences on the Xbox 360 but when played under the right conditions (i.e. when playing with a group of players who want to play as a team) the game certainly has its moments.

Enemy Territory throws you into the war between the human GDF and the alien Strogg. The game offers a single-player campaign and support for Xbox Live and System Link play. There’s even a Training mode to help introduce you to the game’s nuances. Strangely there is no support for local multiplayer. Even the inclusion of two-player split-screen play would have been welcome. The inclusion of a single-player campaign certainly seems like a wise move but essentially it’s just an extension of the Training mode. There are four campaigns to tackle: North America, North Europe, Africa and Pacific but each of these offer three maps that are used for skirmish battles. There is no storyline to tie the battles together and you never get a sense that you are playing anything other than a skirmish battle.

There can be no denying that Enemy Territory is at its best when played as a multiplayer game with gamers who are prepared to work as a team. In such conditions it’s not difficult to actually enjoy the whole experience. The problem is that under any other conditions, the game is a rather dull affair. The lack of a true campaign mode really puts a dent in the appeal for those looking for a solid single-player experience. The skirmish battles that pass for a campaign are actually quite poor thanks to a rather weak AI. It’s also not much of an online experience if you aren’t all working together as a team (this isn’t the game’s fault though to be fair). You can’t simply take an every man for himself attitude with Enemy Territory because the game relies on each player in a team co-operating and making the most of their class abilities.

On the whole, Enemy Territory doesn’t look too bad but it can’t be regarded as one of the better looking FPS titles on the Xbox 360. The various environments, which are absolutely huge, look a little bland and the textures aren’t as detailed as they could have been. In essence the game definitely looks like a port rather than something that was created specifically with the 360 hardware in mind. The frame rate isn’t too bad when playing the single-player game but it can suffer from lag when playing online which can make the experience more difficult than it should be.

The game could have been better for deaf gamers. The opening movie that plays as the game loads isn’t subtitled. The Training mode is also not subtitled and its usefulness is debateable as far as deaf gamers are concerned. All communications you receive during the campaign skirmish battles are not subtitled, which is also disappointing. You’re visually notified of any awards you earn. The objectives are shown in text when you first begin a battle and the map you can access does show the location of the objectives, but it’s far from an ideal situation as far as deaf gamers are concerned.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars offers a decent class-based multiplayer experience but it’s a game that's up against stiff opposition from other titles on the Xbox 360, such as The Orange Box for instance and as such is probably only going to appeal to those who have a strong interest in the game. The single-player game is actually quite weak thanks to the rather lacklustre AI and the fact that no real effort has been made to provide a real single-player campaign. The skirmish battles would have been fun if only the AI had been up to scratch. The lack of a local multiplayer option also hurts the experience somewhat. The game is a full price title and as such is rather awkward to recommend. Only those who really want to play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on their Xbox 360 should give the game a look.
